Uber plans to offer self-driving rides in Texas with May Mobility this year

Uber has made a major announcement that will revolutionize the way people travel in Texas. The ride-hailing platform will soon offer self-driving rides powered by May Mobility on its app, adding to the existing autonomous options from Waymo. Additionally, Tesla is gearing up to enter the competition by introducing its own self-driving ride-hailing service in Austin.

May Mobility, a relatively lesser-known player in the autonomous driving space, has secured a multi-year strategic partnership with Uber. The company plans to deploy thousands of autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform in the coming years, starting with an initial launch in Arlington, Texas by the end of 2025. May Mobility’s fleet consists of hybrid Toyota Sienna vans equipped with its own sensor suite, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and safety.

Both Uber and May Mobility share a common goal of scaling autonomous vehicle use in ride-hail services, aiming to provide consumers with greater choice and accessibility to cutting-edge transportation options. This partnership signifies a significant step towards mainstream adoption of self-driving technology, with Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasizing the importance of collaboration with leading autonomous vehicle developers like May Mobility.

May Mobility’s CEO and co-founder, Edwin Olson, expressed excitement about the partnership with Uber, highlighting the potential for expanding into major markets as a premier autonomy-as-a-service provider. By joining forces with Uber, May Mobility aims to bring the transformative benefits of autonomous vehicles to a wider audience across the United States.

If successful, the collaboration between Uber and May Mobility will see driverless rides from both Waymo and May Mobility available to customers in Texas by the end of the year. This development signals a significant shift towards a future where autonomous transportation becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, offering a glimpse into the possibilities of a more efficient and sustainable transportation ecosystem.
